This IS a question that can be expanded beyond those that have experienced amputation. Is this NATURAL SELECTION, FREE WILL, THE WRATH OF A HIGHER BEING, OR JUST DESTINY? Do we blame SCIENCE, GOD, OR CHANCE? I don't think we will know until there is, if ever, THE FINAL EXPLANATION! Perhaps, these questions will or will not be answered. Until then, I suggest taking the path that will best satisfy your beliefs. I do suggest though, be on either side of the fence but don't sit on it!
